Is this what anxiety is like for you?
Symptoms of anxiety - may only need a selection of these
Look in your body for:
You feel breathless
High heart rate
Feel, faint or dizzy,
Sweating and trembling
Dry mouth
Upset tummy
Lumps in your throat
Feel nervous and irritated
Feel tired and exhausted
Feel tense and rigid
Anger, sadness, frustration
Sense of helplessness
Paralyzing fear
Persistent fear
Panic responses
Look in your head for:
Thinking that goes around and around
Overthinking, overanalyzing and worry
Thinking stuck in the past or the future
Thinking that is critical, negative and angry
Thinking that has rules, regulations and demands
Persistent worrying
Look for the behaviours you do:
Repetitive behaviours- such as too much drinking, smoking, biting fingernails, tapping feet, eating or shopping
Procrastinating and avoidance
Self-sabotage- missing deadlines, making poor decisions
Inability to decide or commit
Avoidance: staying home, avoiding people, places, and situations
Distraction behaviours: overemphasis on your phone, computer, TV, fitness or work
Why does your Anxiety hang around?
I have a Monkey Mind.
So many times, you can hear that thinking inside your head—that never lets up. Over the years, the same thoughts seem to repeat themselves and become burned into your consciousness.
You’ll never be as clever as they are. You don’t fit in. Everyone will find out soon that you are not a nice person. It's too hard for you to get it right.
It's not that this thinking is unusual for normal brain talk or that there’s some good evidence to back it up. What’s problematic and exhausting about this ongoing self-talk is that, in the end, you WILL start to believe it. And you’ll believe all the unlikely parts of it so that, in the end, you really feel that you’ll never make it, be good enough, or be able to cope. It’s believing in your monkey mind thoughts that makes anxiety sticky, awful and powerfully negative.
I Have to Get Rid of It.
Depending on how much you dislike that person inside of you, or those parts of you that make mistakes, say stupid things or let you down, you’ll try anything to get rid of that monkey mind.
You may even get depressed because you can’t put that monkey in a cupboard and then go out and have coffee. No, you are part of that thinking, and you can’t escape it. You become desperate to change it - so you yell at it, lecture it, distract it, persuade it, argue with it, or even reward it for being good. All your efforts come to nothing. The thoughts prevail. You become angry and frustrated and redouble your efforts. You must be able to manage this. but you can’t. You become more anxious.
I Hate Being Me.
You start to make peace with yourself and learn to live with the parts of yourself you don't like. You try hard to think of new things, meditate, be grateful, and say nice things to people you don't like. You feel that you aren’t being true to yourself. You don't like this approach, even if it works. You start to hate how you tend to resent the everlasting fearful feelings that make you feel sick, unhappy, and stressed. You don’t love your mornings or enjoy your evenings. You are tired of it all. You hate being you.

Dan: Stress and Anxiety at Work
Dan, tall, dark-haired, and sporting strong stubble, speaks hesitantly about his concentration problems at work. A high-level executive, he Is used to dealing with countless problems and decisions on a daily basis.
These challenges are ones he has always enjoyed. But Dan is now concerned; he says he struggles to focus and can’t always meet the daily work targets that once seemed effortless. Sometimes he finds himself sitting and staring for long periods, and he isn’t tackling even the urgent tasks that crowd his desk. Unusually, he is often unprepared for critically important meetings and has been caught out in front of his colleagues.
Dan says he spends much of his day thinking, worrying, and even daydreaming—something he never used to do. Now, he constantly worries that something major is wrong and that he won’t ever be able to cope with work demands.
Dan chooses to do CBT. He’s read that it’s practical, and solution-focused, and he won’t need endless sessions. He chooses 4X4 because he’s keen to understand more about his brain and prefers to work at his own pace.
As he goes through 4X4, Dan becomes powerfully aware of what is happening inside his head. He now listens more intently to the thoughts and feelings he is experiencing, particularly in difficult times.
As he listens, he remembers to distance himself from those thoughts and feelings that pressure him and push him into feeling helpless and stressed. He has some specific thinking strategies that he likes to use, and he knows how to redirect his thoughts when they feel overwhelming. He notices that as the weeks pass, he is becoming more aware of his thoughts and feelings and, therefore, more able to manage them.
In contrast to the old Dan, he sees himself as someone separate from these thoughts, and thus, he can remain strong and immovable in difficult times. The idea that he can manage these thoughts and feelings helps Dan feel more confident and capable. He’s starting again to be the strong, competent leader that his colleagues remember. Dan knows that CBT has given him the understanding and skills to last his lifetime.
He continues to improve and practice these skills.
